Welds are commonly used to join two or more metal surfaces. Such welds are designed to meet a certain design criteria which is set out to meet a specified design code such as ASME V. These codes will specify the acceptable size of any defects that may occur in a weld during manufacture or in-service. Typical welding defects, lack of fusion of the weld to the base metal, cracks or porosity inside the weld, and variations in weld density, could cause a structure to break or a pipeline to rupture. Welds may be inspected using a variety of NDT techniques including ultrasonic testing and liquid penetrant/MPI testing.
